Gene wrote that she had the opportunity to do two very exciting things in her life. One was to play in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The other was to be a contestant on the Game show "Blockbusters."
Gene was on the show in 1981, but the show was on re-runs in 2006 and was noticed by a baseball fan who contacted the AAGPBL website and as a result, Gene has revealed her "other talent" to all the world once again. Gene stated in all her time on the game show, she only mentioned once that she had played on the Rockford Peaches women's baseball team. Of course, this was long before the popularity of the league which was sparked by the hit movie, "A League of Their Own."
At the time, the contestants were only allowed to win 10 games. Gene defeated 10 family pair opponents and retired undefeated. The rules were changed, however, and contestants were permitted to participate in 20 games. Gene was invited back on the show and added one more win to her total before the show was cancelled.
Gene relates about the long wait in a small hotel room in Burbank CA. She ran through an audition test and 19 tapings before she had the opportunity to go on the show. She recalled with sheer joy the experience which she shared with three of her six children and her husband in attendance.
Gene stated, "I was very fortunate and extremely grateful . This was a very exciting time in my life." Gene was married to Donald Travis in the mid 1940's.
