See Jeanne's Obituary.
Jeanne Gilchrist passed away peacefully on Aug. 4, 2004, after a tenacious hold on life.
Jeanne was a long-time resident of New Westminster, British Columbia. She was predeceased by her father, Jim, mother, Edith, as well as her brother Jim.
Jeanne had a joy of life and inspired all who knew her to be honest to their spirit, unpretentious, and generously share unconditional warmth and love. She leaves a wonderful legacy as she is survived by her beloved family members, including her step-mother, sister, brother, sister-in-law nephew and nieces. Jeanne is also survived by aunts and cousins in Canada and Scotland, and of course, many, many Canadian and international friends. Her feistiness kept all on their toes.
Jeanne was a teacher and gifted sports woman, playing in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League; proudly being a member of The Vancouver Golf Club for over 50 years; and an Honorary Life Member of the Vancouver Business Women’s Curling Club. Tennis, bridge,, and lawn bowling completed her interest. Jeanne was also an honorary member of the American and Canadian Baseball Halls of Fame.
While she was ill, she found the inner strength to face her declining health with dignity, impressing her family, friends, and caregivers to the end with her radiant smile. This personal courage helped her in the daily struggle to fight her illness with a brave face, but most importantly, showed us the way to deal with the unexpected directions that life sometimes takes. She was a rock-steady figure in the lives of many and was always there for other people. She never lost her cherry spirit and was able to see the lighter side of thing right to the very end.
Many thanks to her close and supportive network of family, friends and wonderfully supportive care givers.
A happy celebration of Jeanne’s life was held at the Vancouver Golf Club Aug. 20, 2004. In lieu of flowers, Jeanne requested donations be made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.
