After her year in the AAGPBL, Dorothy switched to Chicago's National Girls Baseball League, which was actually a professional softball league. She played for the NGBL's Sparks in 1945, and developed a reputation for a fiery demeanor. Herb Gattis, an Esquire Magazine writer in Toronto, Canada, called her his "favorite fastballer" because he got a kick out of when she trashed talked opponents before and during games and made her disdain known when umpire calls did not go her way.
